The Number of Electric Cars Exceeds Diesels in the EU

While total automobile sales in the European Union (EU) reached 10.5 million last year, the market share of electric cars increased to 14.6 percent.

According to data from the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA), the automobile market in the European Union (EU) grew by 13.9 percent last year compared to 2022 and reached 10.5 million sales in total.

While all EU markets except Hungary expanded last year, double-digit growth figures were recorded in many countries.

Although gasoline cars in the EU maintained their leadership with a market share of 35.3 percent in 2023, there was a slight decrease compared to the market share of 36.4 percent in 2022.

In 2023, diesel car sales reached 1.4 million units and the market share decreased from 16.4 percent in 2022 to 13.6 percent.

Hybrid car sales in the EU reached 2.7 million units, an increase of 29.5 percent compared to 2022. Thus, hybrid cars constituted one quarter of the total automobile market.

Looking at fully electric car sales, electric cars became the third most popular option in 2023.

Electric car sales increased by 37 percent compared to 2022, reaching 1.5 million sales. The share of fully electric cars also surpassed diesel, which remained constant at 14.6 percent, at 13.6 percent.

While gasoline cars maintained their leadership with 35.3 percent, hybrid cars took second place with a market share of 25.8 percent.

It is predicted that automobile sales in the EU will increase by 2.5 percent in 2024, reaching 10.7 million units.

About 20 percent of total sales, or more than two million, are expected to be electric.
