Crisis in the Automotive Industry in the USA Started a Strike

Crises in the automotive industry are constant. In the next crisis, US automotive manufacturer Ford is facing the biggest strike in history.

150 thousand employees went on strike in the production facilities of General Motors and Stellantis' North American units. Workers at Ford, General Motors and Stellantis, known as the United Auto Workers Union, called for a strike to demand their rights.

Regarding the issue, General Motors' general manager Mary Barra said that she was "extremely disappointed" and that the strike "will not be good for the economy in general" and that efforts should be made to reach an agreement as soon as possible.

The union will pay workers $500 in compensation during the week. There is a strike fund of $825 million if the strike lasts three months. The demands of the striking workers are as follows;

  • 40 percent wage increase.
  • Ending tiers where some workers are paid on a lower pay scale than others.
  • Restoring privileges from previous agreements, such as medical benefits for retirees.
  • More paid leave.
  • Granting rights to workers affected by factory closures.
